World Championship Recap: Fabrizio Von Nacher

Getting ready for Worlds was an exciting process. We started building up some more base for about 2 weeks. Then my coach Paul Abrahams helped me to do a lot of strong rides on the roads of Irvine. And finally, I stared slowing down to recover for the race.

The event was incredible. The organization was excellent and the course was in great condition. What I enjoyed the most was the people in Richmond, they were extremely nice. The day we went to see the course was great because we got to ride beside all the pros. It was an incredible experience.

The race was like a criterium just on a longer course and a lot longer distance at 100 miles. The pace was always hard and with all the turns (18), it was sometimes dangerous. The cobblestone climbs we super fun, but what people didn’t realize is that the fight wasn’t in the cobblestone. The hardest part was getting into the cobblestone climbs. That was a full-out sprint to the bottom of the climb. Continue reading “World Championship Recap: Fabrizio Von Nacher”

Von Nacher heading to U23 World Championships!

We are very excited that Fabrizio Von Nacher has been selected by Mexico to represent his country in the U23 World Championships, this Friday in Richmond, VA! After placing 2nd at the Mexico U23 National Championships in July, the spot became his and he began focusing all of his attention and training on this one race. This will be Fabrizio’s first appearance at the World Championship, and we are also very excited that he will be the first member of the KHS-Maxis-JLVelo Cycling Team to be named to a World Championship Team.

Since July, along with the leadership of his coach and team director Paul Abrahams, Fabi has spent 25-30 hour a week training for the 100.8 mile event. With the event being held here in the United States, he will be joined by his parents in Virginia, as well as Paul Abrahams.

Interbike 2015

IMG_1217
The KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling Team had a great time at Interbike this past week. We had the opportunity to join KHS Bicycles in the unveiling of the new 2016 KHS Flite 900 Team model bicycle. This project has been a great undertaking by KHS as well as Paul Abrahams, and it was really exciting for the team to see the new design as well as talk to KHS dealers from around the country about the new features. We are looking forward to racing on this frame in 2016.

Our week at Interbike was packed with sponsor meetings which gave our athletes a chance to interact with our partners at both Out Door Demo and inside at the show. We are also so humbled by the support we receive from our partners and it was really cool to walk by the Velo Saddles and Xpedo booths and see Ulises Castillo leading the team, larger than life!

Our bottom bracket sponsor, Praxis Works, has supported our team since the beginning and we were the first big team they were partnered with. These relationships are integral to the success of our program and having them part of our team is fantastic. This was the first time for both Efren Flores and Shawn Wayland to take part in Interbike, so having the chance to meet Adam from Praxis and learn about his journey as a cyclists, business owner and pioneer in the industry was priceless.

Ken and Jen from Xpedo, our pedal sponsors, create a fantastic product, super cool shirts, and are always excited to interact with our riders, gain their feedback, and help support the team as it grows. Thank you Jen and Ken!

Being at the show and interacting with so many of our sponsors was a great send off to the off season for our athletes and the team. Know we have the support of such high level partners gives us the confidence to charge forward with our off season training, setting our sights high for 2016. We are looking forward to what the next season will bring!

Shawn Wayland – Ready for 2016!

11872038_1458395074467667_3541631164253472042_o

About a month ago, a family friend asked me, “What was something you didn’t expect about racing with KHS, and making the transition to racing at the national level?” I paused for minute in thought. Then I replied, “I didn’t realize how hard it would be.” At which point he burst out laughing. But it was true. I remember back at our first team camp in October when we all first got together to ride. Paul had us go and do intervals up Modjeska Canyon, which for those that don’t know, is like a 4 minute ridiculously steep climb. I’m pretty sure I was the last guy up over it each time, and I was just dying. Paul recorded all of our times each interval, and we discussed it that night. I think Dave and Fabi had the fastest times, and Paul was like, “everyone’s got a lot of work to do.”

Once race season rolled around, I knew what he meant. YOWSERS!  Some of the NCC Criteriums and NRC stage races we did I had no idea what I was in for. But as the season progressed, I slowly got more and more used to the caliber of racing, and tactics, and reading what’s really happening in the race.  Paul was great in not putting a lot of pressure on me for results, but to learn, and just keep improving. He understands it takes time to physically and mentally be ready to really race at that level. It was a great season, and I’m really looking forward next year! I’ll definitely be looking to get some more results for the team now that I’ve got a year of racing experience and significantly better fitness from that level of racing!

One of the big adjustments this year too, besides racing, was the traveling. I’m not someone who has done much traveling, so the first few travel trips racing were a bit stressful. But then it became semi-routine. I have to say, I’ve laughed unbelievably hard to the point of tears at times during some of the conversations that happen in the team van driving across country. Which brings me to the team. We all get along really well on and off the bike. That’s huge because when we’re traveling we’re with each other 24/7.  If we had inner team drama it would be a nightmare. So it’s great we all get along.

Another great part of traveling was all the host families we stayed with throughout the year. Our hosts this year were all incredible, and I know I speak for the entire team when I say we really appreciated them putting us all up for days on end.

In summary, it’s been a huge year of growth both physically and mentally for me. I’ve had some unbelievable experiences, been to some pretty sweet places, learned a ton, and met some really cool people.

My first year on the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo team will be one I won’t forget! Thanks to all my awesome teammates, our Director Paul, and all the sponsors for such a memorable year!   can’t wait to see what next season holds!

This past Sunday marked the final race of the SoCal Cup series. The series began at the Boulevard Road Race the first weekend of February which Fabrizio Von Nacher finished second, spearing heading the beginning of what would become a very successful racing season for the entire team.

As the team towed the line in Carson on Sunday at the final CBR Criterium of the season, the riders held the 2nd-5th positions in the individual standings, while maintaining a solid lead in the team overall standings. At the end of the day, Chris Barton finished 2nd overall in the SoCal Cup with teammate David Santos 4th and Fabrizio Von Nacher 5th. These results solidified the team overall victory for the 5th season in a row.

In 2011, David Santos won the the final race of the season in San Clemente, sealing the Criterium Championship as well as the SoCal Cup Overall. This result ultimately placed the whole team on the podium to receive the SoCal Cup trophy. Since then, the team has made a steady impact on local and national racing, racking up over 30 wins per season, and 70+ podiums.

As the 2015 season winds down, the team has tallied 26 wins and 72 podiums, including several stops on top of NRC, National Championship, and NCC podium steps.

On Sunday, the race boasted over $1,000 in cash primes as well as a very hefty prize purse for the 90 minute event. The team raced aggressively from the gun, but with the SoCal Cup leader in the race as well as multiple quality sprinters, the breakaway efforts were thwarted.

With just a few laps remaining, Efren Flores spearheaded a 3-man breakaway that quickly gained traction on the tiring peloton. As the lap cards ticked down, he powered away from his companions, leaving every bit of energy out on the road. As he rounded the final turn, up the tailwind finish, his gap was dwindling with the surge of the chasing teams. Caught just before the line, he finished 7th on the day.

Congratulations to the entire team for a fantastic season of racing, and for winning the SoCal Cup Team Overall for the 5th year in a row!
