The Barrio Logan Grand Prix is one of the teams favorite local events of the year. The course is 0.8 miles long with 8 turns within that distance. The turns traverse through potholes and bumps that always make the race challenging. The KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling Team had 5 racers at the event. Shawn Wayland, Brian McCulloch, David Santos, Efren Flores and Chris Barton took on the competition and committed to a team plan from the gun.
Shawn Wayland enjoyed the diversity of the course and the additional challenges the elements provided. When asked about how the race played out, here is his response:
“Lock it up.” Those were Director Paul Abrahams words before the start. We wanted a situation where we would walk away with a victory without question. The race was full of surges with everyone trying to get a split and a break away going. Wind, slight uphill, between turn 6 & 7, and a ton of corners had the whole field on high alert for any riders going up the road, which was why nothing was getting away.
That is until Chris “The Flying Mustache” Barton attacked at what had to be close to the speed of light about 30 minutes into the 75 minute criterium. That began what ended up being the deciding 3 man split where Brian was also present. The gap grew and soon they had a half a lap lead. With 3 laps to go, Barton attacked out of the trio, and rode to a solo victory, with Brian sprinting to a 2nd place! Dave ended up with a 5th, myself 8th, and Efren put in a solid ride and hard work throughout the race. It was a great race for the team, and it was fun! And we finished the day off with a great barbecue at the Santos’ house! Win win!
