Brentwood Grand Prix is one of the most exciting courses and venues put on in the SoCal region. With high numbers of spectators and a course that begins with turn one being a hairpin, the race is always exciting. It is not a traditional flat criterium. Over the 6-turn course, the riders had a nice descending turn to contend with and an uphill dig into the 6th and final turn before heading into the finish straight away.
Due to sponsor obligations in Northern California, our squad was down to two racers: David Santos and Lee Muse. David is leading the SoCal Cup points and Lee is always ready for a difficult sprint finish. Both riders received call-ups before the start of the race which was an added bonus of starting on the front.
With the many turns and strong wind, the race became animated very quickly, causing the peloton to split into pieces. A front group of 9 racers including David rapidly gained time on the hard-chasing field. Also in the group were finishing threats Cody O’Reilly (Optum), Diego Sandoval (InCylce), Eric Marcotte (Elbowz); and Anthony Canevari (Sho-Air). As the lead group gained over half a lap on the field, groups began attacking out of the field forming smaller chase groups.
To spice things up in the breakaway a little bit, the announcer called an $800 prime. As the racers rounded the last turn, Marcotte, Sandoval, and O’Reilly had shed their breakaway partners and were gaining time. 4th across the line was David Santos in no-man’s land where he spent the majority of the rest of the race. He put his State Champion Time Trial skills to the test and hung tough for a 4th place finish. The front group of 3 eventually lapped the field in what ended up being a slightly chaotic finish with. O’Reilly took the win with Marcotte on his hip for 2nd, Sandoval placed 3rd.
Lee Muse finished safely in the main group. Being the SCNCA District Championships, Marcotte was not eligible for the jersey because he is from Arizona. The jersey went to Cody O’Reilly, which means David was on the podium for 3rd.
