The KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling Team traveled straight to Bend, OR after a successful race at the Boise Twilight Criterium. The 5-day UCI Stage Race is one of the most challenging events of the season, and the athletes were happy to arrive early to spend some extra time relaxing, training, and seeing our great hosts. The teams roster for the event is as follows: Fabrizio Von Nacher, Cory Lockwood, Eder Frayre, Aflredo Castillo, Duban Sanchez and Innokenty Zavyalov.
Fabrizio Von Nacher reported in on his experience with the team at the event:
“Cascade Cycling Classic is one of my favorite races in the US. I love Bend, Oregon and all the people in town that support the race. Especially all of our host families whom we have stayed with for 6 years now. The Johnson’s, the Hayes family, Rob and Mary Angelo – without them this race wouldn’t be the same, they are the best!
In this year’s race, we had an awesome group of guys on the team. All of my teammates were in great form and this year the team had its best results at the stage race. We knew that Eder would climb very well and that Inno would have a great time trial, so they were leading team through out the race.
The team plan in most of the stages was to keep our three top GC contenders Inno, Eder and Cory out of trouble and to help them save as much energy for the final climbs. Alfredo, Duban and myself were constantly moving up to the front of the field to keep the guys safe. When we got to the climb, the guys rode incredible and Eder managed to get 4th on the first day of racing – 113 miles finishing with the Climb to McKenzie Pass while Inno and Cory made the front group.
The follow day was the Prineville Individual Time Trial where Inno was our best guy. He did a extremely fast TT and was our best GC rider finishing with an impressive 5th place. The third stage was similar to the first in duration and climbing. For Alfredo and me, our job was to get our 3 best climbers to the climb safe and as fresh as possible. Early in the race, Eder got in the breakaway and managed to win the KOM jersey which was very exciting for the team. By the end of the race, Alfredo and I went to the front and kept Eder, Inno and Cory at the front. Again, these guys smashed the climb and stay in the front group with Eder doing another top 10 plus wining the KOM jersey.
The criterium is always a fun and fast race in Downtown Bend with great community support and spectators. Rally Pro Racing was the team that was leading the General Classification overall and they took control of the race from the gun. They allowed a breakaway get up the road that did not contain any riders that were threats, which stayed away until the finish. The team did an incredible job keeping Eder and Inno in the front to make sure they didn’t got caught in any field split and lose any time on the stage.
The last day is always super hard as it was the fast and unforgiving Awbrey Butte Circuit. Going into the stage, Inno was sitting 6th overall and Eder was in the top 20 and with a great chance to get a result on the day. The teams job was to take care of this two guys and help them save everything for the last time up the climb to the finish. The team rode incredible and we protected the guys in the front group. Eder rode fantastic and landed another top 10 performance where Inno’s finish on the stage placed him 9th overall.
We were very lucky to have an amazing support crew in Bend this year. From all our sponsors, the team staff, to our gracious hosts, we were really taken care of well! Matthew at MWS Sports, a KHS Bicycles Dealer in town rolled out the red carpet for us. Thank you Matthew! Our new friend Michelle Pears went above and beyond to help the team out on and off the road, as our friend Lauren Roos from home in California also stepped up big time to make sure we were taken care of. Thank you!
