The Chuck Pontius Memorial Castaic Lake Road Race/SoCal State Road Race Championship turned out to be a tough day for us. We had five riders for the race. David Santos, Brian McCulloch, David Santos, Cory Williams, Steven Davis and myself. The Hincapie Development team showed up with four guys that picked the race apart and put us in a defensive position early in the race. Our plan going into the race was to protect Dave Santos, we knew that the course was going to select the race so we weren’t going to initiate any of the early moves and save as many guys for as long as we could but by following this strategy we became isolated and exposed.

The early break went up the road in the first 5k of the race with no Hincapie riders and none of us, we went up the first climb steady no one chasing or attacking yet. Once we were down into the valley Brian McCulloch and I started to follow moves to try and bridge across, but every time, we were marked by a Hincapie rider and then countered by Hincapie rider, simply out-numbered. Eventually Joe Schmalz (Hincapie) went across solo to the break. Once we got back to the start/finish, a few more riders had bridged across to the break including Hincapie’s Oscar Clark with none of us. Brian and Steven Davis made it back up to Dave and I after being split off on the climb. Together we began chasing, they rode to the bottom of the next climb then I set tempo on the climb.  Eventually I would  get dropped, leaving Dave alone in a group of about 10 or 15. We brought the gap down from two and a half minutes to one minute with one lap to go on the 28 mile course.

Dave eventually got away from the chase group with Stefano Barberi (CalGiant) and Joey Rosskopf (Hincapie) and made it up to the lead group where Dave finished 10th in difficult circumstances. Congrats to Hincapie Development Team, they rode a great race and swept the podium.
