This past Sunday was the final California Bicycle Racing Criterium of the season. The KHS-Maxxis pb JAKROO Cycling Team had 4 racers in attendance with the goal of making the race hard from the gun. Brian McCulloch, Sergio Escutia, David Santos and Shawn Daurelio were ready for battle. As the last SoCal Cup Points race of the season, the team intended to have riders David Santos and Brian McCulloch get as many points as possible in order to move up into the top 5 over all.
The race started with a bang as Brian attacked into the first turn. Director Paul Abrahams cheered from the sideline to go “All In” and so from lap 3, the breakaway was established. Back in the field, riders were attacking and bridging across to the initial move. Dave Santos was the first teammate to make it across to Brian and Shawn and Sergio were soon to follow. The breakaway was now more of field split with 15-18 riders rolling at max speeds. To keep the pace high, Brian and Sergio attacked out of that group to create a new breakaway. With all our riders out of the main field, the pace had slowed just enough that Brian and Sergio along with their 3 breakaway partners lapped the field! They were rolling and kept the pace high, spending just over a lap with the field as they split off the front again.
The group containing David and Shawn was quick to follow the initial move and lapped the field as well. This has to be an officials worst nightmare! The field was quickly dwindling as those in the chase group realized all the SoCal Cup points along with any prize money from the day, were riding away off the front. Brian and Sergio were now left up the road with Shawn Wayland of Serious Cycling who has proven to be a very strong finisher. Not wanting to take him to the line, Sergio and Brian began attacking and counter attacking until they had isolated Shawn and the two of them lapped the field for a second time!
In the meantime, Dave and Shawn were making their way back to Wayland knowing that 3rd place on the road was still up for grabs. Both riders did an impressive job reeling him back in and ultimately on the final laps of the race, all the riders left on the course were united in one final bunch. Brian and Sergio were a lap up on everyone else, putting Santos in position for the final sprint and the chance to stack the podium 1-2-3. Ultimately Brian won the race with Sergio just behind him for 2nd. Ben Bertinger of the MBW Development Team won the field sprint to place 3rd and David Santos 4th.
The whole team rode like champions and worked amazingly well together. These types of race conditions and scenarios keeps every rider on their toes mentally and physically. It was a great opportunity for each athlete to capitalize on their strengths and be a part of a very solid team result. This team win brings the overall wins of the season to 26 with 81 podiums. The team won the overall SoCal Cup Team Standings for Category 1-2 with consistent results, wins, and podium appearances.
