Dana Point Grand Prix was the team first NCC (National Criterium Calendar) race of the year. We were very excited and motivated after Cory’s win one day before in Barrio Logan Criteruim. The team plan was simple. Thomas Jondall, David Santos and Steven Davis needed to cover the moves. Cory Williams, Brian McCulloch and I needed to save the our efforts for the finish.
As the race started, my only concern was to trying to stay at the front and out of trouble. The race was fast and guys were launching attacks, but nothing to be worried about. Mid-way through the race, a move with about 10 guys went up off the front with my teammate Dave Santos. I was on the field and saw a UHC guy bridge to the break, so I followed him with another rider and opened a little gap on the field.
Half a lap later, we caught up to the break, but the chasing peloton didn’t take much time to bring us back. The race was almost over and my teammate Brian went in a move with a Jelly Belly rider and opened a 20 second gap on the field. This gave us a free pass to not work in the field and get ready for the sprint.
As the last laps were coming down, the fight for position was intense. But with help from my teammate Cory, I managed to stay safe and in the front all the time. In the final lap, the break got caught and we were in a good position for the sprint. We took the final turn fast and stared the sprint long to try to come over the leading train. With that effort we manged to get 3rd and 4th in the field sprint. I want to thank my teammates and all the people behind us that make this program possible. Thanks to all the sponsors of the team for there support and believing in us.
