The Ontario Race Series is a staple of the Southern California race calendar. The 6th and final event of the 2013 season took place this past Sunday in 100+ degree weather late in the afternoon. The CashCall Mortgage Cycling Team fielded the local riders, Devan Dunn, David Santos, Brian McCulloch and Chris Barton for the 75-minutes which was held on the 6-turn course.

The team went into the event with three specific goals. First, the team wanted to continue to improve their racing as a team and a cohesive unit. Second, the team wanted to increase Dave Santos’s SoCalCup Points where he is presently 2nd overall. Lastly, the riders committed to having either Chris Barton or Brian McCulloch go for the win since these two riders had yet to find themselves on the top step of the podium this season.

Chris Barton gives his recount of the exciting race on how the team was able to successfully execute all the goals for the day.

Ontario was a satisfying win for me because we raced perfectly as a team. Right from the gun, Brian and Devan attacked and stayed away for the first 10 laps or so. This allowed Dave and I to sit comfortably in the draft and follow wheels while the field chased. As soon as they were caught, Dave and I attacked and established the day’s breakaway which included us two and 4 other riders.

Everyone worked together well and we slowly gained time on the field until we had a solid minute gap. With 5 laps to go in the race, Dave and I started attacking out of group. Dave would sprint up the road, and I would sit on the group as they chased him down. As soon as they caught him, I would counter attack and Dave would sit on as the other riders chased me down. This cycle repeated 6 or 7 times, with Carlos Alzate (United Health Care) impressively bringing each of us back each time we attacked.

Finally, with under 2 laps to go, I put in another attack and managed to break free. I put my head down and dug deep, and by the last lap I had a sizable gap. I kept the lead and pulled off the win, with Dave out-sprinting Alzate to get 2nd place! It was a great day for the CashCall Mortgage Cycling Team. We all took advantage of every opportunity the race presented us, took control of the situation, and emerged victorious.

Chris’s win is the 20th victory of the 2013 season for the CashCall Mortgage Cycling Team. His win along with Dave’s 2n bring our podium count to 40!
