The KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling team had 7 athletes racing at the Red Trolley Criterium. Brian McCulloch, David Santos, Chris Barton, Shawn Daurelio, Shawn Wayland, Sergio Escutia and Fabrizio Von Nacher toed the line for the 75 minute event. Eventual winner, Fabrizio Von Nacher, reports on his first win of the 2015 season:
For the team, this race weekend is always super important. It is the first weekend that we race together and also the first race of the season for us. We were super exited for the Red Trolley Criterium and to see the new course.
It was a different course than most of the crits because it was held in the Qualcomm Stadium parking lot. But it ended up being a hard and fun course.
In the race, the plan was to be aggressive and try to have a couple of guys in a break. The race started and it was super fast and aggressive. All my teammates were riding great, and they were really aggressive, but the field didn’t let the break go.
Finally, Chris Barton got in a 4 man break. After awhile though, the group manage to bring it back. After that move came back, the attacks started and with about 15 minutes to go in the race, I went on the attack and opened a gap.
When I looked back, I saw Cal Giant rider Ben Wolfe chasing me solo so I waited for him and we started working together. After a couple of laps riding off the front and with 3 laps to finish, Wolfe tried to go solo and attack me. I had a really hard time chasing him back, but I finally caught him. Once I realized that the group wasn’t going to catch us, I knew I needed to save as much energy as possible for the sprint.
At the end, thanks to the great work my teammates did to shutdown the field, I was able to win the race!! I want to thank all the sponsors that believe in us and this program. Thanks to Paul, Joy and Gary Rennie for making this team possible and finally thank my teammates for an awesome weekend and for their hard work for this win!!
