Cory Lockwood has begun his first season racing with the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling team. This past Saturday he and his teammates raced in San Bernardino, CA and he recounts his experience below:
The 2016 Rosena Ranch Circuit Race was a tough race, full of many ups and downs of all kinds. The mens Pro field, which included some of SoCals finest, launched at 3:10 in a big way with a flurry of attacks and counter attacks. The race was for 90 minutes and our team had a full squad for the event.
The pace was aggressive and fast for the whole race and only slowed up briefly to avoid 2 separate crashes. A few unfortunate riders were involved in the crashes, among the list of victims were a few valuable members of the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo team. After losing Fabrizio Von Nacher, Efren Flores, David Santos and Robert Freeman to the crashes and misfortunes of racing, our task of winning became that much more difficult.
Despite a number of attacks and breakaways, the pace of the aggressive race seemed to stay that way until I was able to establish a three man break with 10 laps to go on the 2 mile course. The break, which included myself and on rider from InCycle and the other from Centric, eventually built up to 35 second gap at one point in the race. With about 6 laps to go, 3 men were able to bridge to the break, making it a six man battle for the win.
With everyone having their own plans in mind, the members of the break began to fight amongst themselves. After multiple attempts on everyones part to swing the race in their favor, the inevitable finish came down to a sprint for the members of the breakaway. I was able to sprint it out to a 5th place on the day and salvage a tough ride for the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo team.
After the tough afternoon of racing, all the members of our team discussed the race with team director Paul Abrahams, and went home with the mind set and work ethic to making the needed changes to help improve our race efforts and progress our team and sponsors to the eventual top step of the podium.
Our next race venue will take place next weekend up in NorCal at the annual Chico Stage Race where we will be looking to improve and display the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo team in a great fashion.
