Sergio Escutia won his first race with the KHS-Maxxis pb JAKROO Cycling Team this past weekend. Below is his report of how the race played out.
“The last Saturday of August the team did the Cajon Pass Circuit race in San Bernardino California. We had four racers at the race with Brian McCulloch, David Santos, Shawn Daurelio and myself.
One of the things that we noticed right away was the heat; it was going to be a promising hot day of racing. The mood of the team was high as usual and we were ready to deliver. We knew that we were going to need to assume a very active roll from the beginning of the race so we wouldn’t miss the move.
Brian went almost from the gun in a solo attack that he was able to hold 2-3 laps of the 18 lap race. Once the group got to him, the counter attacks started from other team as well as ours. One of those attacks selected the breakaway with Brian, Shawn and me in that breakaway. We had three riders in the six-man breakaway and we opened a gap long enough to be sure that we were in the break of the day.
Dave Santos tried several times to reach us and he did a very amazing pursuit for almost the whole race! Of course our breakaway companions didn’t like the idea of Dave joining us, so they started to attack and increase the pace. Thanks to our numeric advantage we were able to play it smart. I counter attacked and went in a really hard TT mode with 8 laps to go. While I was ahead, my teammates were able to save some energy by letting the others do the work.
After a great effort, Dave managed to catch the chase group. He was so exhausted that he was dropped very close to the end of the race.
I was able to increase the gap and hold it until the end to give the team my first win with them.
From the finish line I was able to see how Dave chased back on and caught the chase group as they were nearing the finish line. He did one of the longest and most amazing sprints I have ever seen! Dave got second while Brian took fourth. The whole team did an amazing job and it was definitely a team win.”
