February began with a successful training camp in Tustin to kick off the 2016 season. the KHS-Maxxis-JLVelo Cycling team then headed to Phoenix, AZ to race the first stage race of the season, the Valley of The Sun Stage Race.
For the 2016 season, the team welcomes newcomers Cory Lockwood, Robert Freeman and Duban Sanchez. Each brining unique skills and talents, the team utilized the event as a forum to blend the team, work on execution of tactics, and hone their teamwork.
Time trial specialist, Cory Lockwood, clocked the fastest time for the team in the 14.4 mile time trial on Friday, placing 5th in a talented field. Teammates Ulises Castillo and Fabrizio Von Nacher were not far behind in 8th and 10th respectively. These general classification placings opened the team up to race for the win on Saturday’s 94 mile road race in the hot desert sun.
With a threatening breakaway up the road with solid time on the peloton, Brian McCulloch rallied the team along with other teams in group, to chase the breakaway back. By doing so, the team was able to place Fabrizio Von Nacher up to contend the sprint finish, where he placed a close 5th on the day.
Leading into the criterium, the team knew that the chances of another sprint finish were very high. They rode aggressively from the gun through out the 60 m minute event, and with the final laps ticking down, they set up the lead out for Fabrizio. In a photo finish, he placed 3rd on the stage, bringing home the teams first official podium of 2016.
The team is excited to race the Rosena Ranch Circuit Race this Saturday, 2/20/16 in preparation for the upcoming Chico Stage Race.
