The KHS-Maxxis pb JAKROO Cycling Team raced the three day NCC (National Criterium Calendar) Tulsa Tough last weekend. Fabrizio Von Nacher won the overall omnium for the three days which is the teams best result ever. This is also the first leader’s jersey the team has won this year, and it did not come easy.
Friday and Saturday the races take place at night in downtown Tulsa where the fans come out in droves. Sunday the event caps off with Cry Baby Hill, a technical criterium course that has an electric party atmosphere. Our roster for the event was Brian McCulloch, David Santos, Fabrizio Von Nacher, Steven Davis, Shawn Daurelio and Sergio Escutia. Joy McCulloch competed in the Pro Women’s events as well.
Friday Blue Dome District Criterium:
The first of the three events, the Blue Dome Crit has a high level of energy and excitement. The racing was fast and aggressive with several breakaways getting up the road. However the team knew that without UHC in the move, it would not last. As predicted, the UHC team brought all the moves back for a sprint finish. Fabrizio Von Nacher placed 11th in the final. This event is an omnium, so ranking is based off of placings, not cumulative time. This placed Fabi 11th going into the 2nd stage.
Brady District Criterium:
Saturday night racing took place in the Brady District on a technical course with a steady climb up through the crowds. The team worked hard all race keeping Fabrizio at the front and ready for the sprint finish. Fabi finished 4th on the stage behind three UHC riders. His finish placed him 7th overall in the omnium going into the final race on Sunday.
River Front Criterium AKA Cry Baby Hill:
The final stage of racing at Tulsa is always a blast. The party atmosphere is intense and with the added element of rain in the morning, the riders knew they were up for a battle. David Santos made huge efforts in the first part of the race to bridge to a threatening breakaway up the road. Meanwhile, Brian McCulloch and Fabrizio Von Nacher stayed close together, awaiting the splits in the field and final the sprint finish. With 3 laps to go, the rain started to come down. Fabi and Dave were in great position behind the UHC train and with 2 laps to go, the UHC riders crashed on final turn coming into the finishing straight. One UHC rider cut loose and went up the road with Fabi, Dave and several other riders leading the chase. UHC won the stage solo, with Fabi coming in 3rd by a bike throw and Dave a solid 5th place finish.
The whole team was ecstatic knowing that Fabi placed 3rd on the stage as the rain began picking up. From the podium, we could not tell where he had placed overall. Finally, the announcers told us that with his 11th, 4th, and 3rd place finishes, he had won the overall! Congratulations to the whole team for a great effort all weekend and not giving up. We couldn’t be more happy with the result for the team and for Fabrizio and we could not have done it without the support of all our sponsors, family and friends at home. Thank you!
