Cheyne 3rd Overall at San Dimas Stage Race

Jordan Cheyne won the opening uphill time trial to begin the San Dimas Stage Race in the yellow jersey. With his sub-15 minute effort, he held the coveted leaders jersey by 11 seconds going into Saturday’s 90 mile road race. With multiple time bonuses within the race as well as the finishing line, the team was poised ready to defend the jersey of their general classification leader.

Amassed at the front of the charging peloton, the 8-man squad regulated the breakaway up the road as the time bonuses were gobbled up by non-GC threats. With 12 circuits around Bonelli Park, Heckler Hill funneled the peloton onto a narrow climb lined with fans and spectators – a great atmosphere to race in!

With only a few laps remaining, team leader Jordan Cheyne suffered a mechanical and the team quickly stopped, helped solve the problem, and began to chase the race leader back onto the peloton. The race quickly put 50 seconds into the chasing team, but as they remained calm and collected, they methodically whittled the gap down and brought their leader back to the front group.

Alfredo Rodriguez would ultimately place 3rd on the stage and Jordan retained the yellow jersey going into the final stage on Sunday, the Old Town Grand Prix.

With the time gaps even closer for the 3rd and final stage, the two mid-race time bonus sprints became imperative to patrol. With a roll of the dice, the team allowed a move to solidify up the road after the 1st bonus sprint was contested. With the hopes of other GC contenders vying for their overall position. As the move gained traction, the team realized the best option for the day was to have Sam Bassetti, who was in the move, sprint for the win as the team began to chase from the peloton.

Ultimately Sam would win the stage, but the frustration of having the yellow jersey slip away in the finishing laps of the stage was palpable.

It was a great win for Sam and the team, coming after a win on stage 1 and 3rd place on stage 2. Jordan and the team rode fantastic together, with many highlights and learning points that are sure to pay huge dividends as the race season progresses.
